Book Shows and Festivals: Where You Can Find Blue Manatee Press!

We’re coming into a new season! With autumn right around the corner, we’re thinking about all the book shows and book festivals we’ve attended, and the ones we’re looking forward to in the coming months!

We love participating in all of the book shows and book festivals! As a small, independent book publisher, it gives us a chance to show people in and out of the publishing world who we are, what we do, and what we bring to the table.

We have big plans and hopes for 2020 in regards to book shows and festivals, but we’ve still got a few left for 2019! Here’s where you can find blue manatee press in the coming months!

Heartland Fall Forum

What Is It?

Hosted jointly by the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association and the Great Lakes Independent Booksellers Association, Heartland Fall Forum is a gathering place for those interested in independent bookstores throughout the Midwest. Heartland represents nearly 350 independent bookstores across 12 states in the Midwest.

According to the Heartland Fall Forum website, “We provide a rich environment for anyone allied to the book industry to meet one another, network, introduce authors, promote new titles, place orders, and learn crucial skills from one another to keep independent bookselling strong. We offer a busy show floor, a wide range of author events, and various formats of practical and inspiring education.”

Running from October 2-4 and held at the Cleveland Renaissance Hotel, attendees include booksellers, publishers, authors, wholesalers, distributors, sidelines vendors, librarians, teachers, media, book bloggers, and more.

When Will We Be There?

You can catch us on the trade show floor on Thursday and Friday, October 3rd and 4th, with copies of our fall 2019 titles Mr. Pumpkin’s Tea Party and Gritty Kitty, some fun swag for both of those titles, and maybe even a sneak peek into our 2020 lineup!

We will also be participating this year in the Handselling Rep Around Lunch! “This lunch is designed to get every level of bookseller excited for a crop of new books coming out in the fall and early winter. Sales reps will present their list by giving booksellers the key sales points (ie, target audience, comp titles, elevator pitch, etc.) This event features its own printed program of all of the sales reps' titles. In addition, galleys of the reps' choosing will be available to booksellers at the closing reception. Est. 20 reps and 180 booksellers.” (http://www.heartlandfallforum.org/schedule.html)

Books by the Banks

What Is It?

Held annually in downtown Cincinnati, Books by the Banks is a day-long festival, free and open to the public, featuring. national, regional, and local authors and illustrators. From 10:00-4:00 on Saturday, October 26, attendees can attend panel discussions, have books signed, fun family activities, and more.

Attendees are allowed to bring their own books to the festival, but Books by the Banks strongly encourages people to browse the more than 150 titles for sale. According to their website, “each author has his or her newest book for sale at the tables, and in some cases, past titles as well. Book sales sustain the festival and help us bring a fantastic author lineup to the Cincinnati region year after year. Buy for yourself — or get some holiday shopping finished.”

When Will We Be There?

We’ll be back at Books by the Banks for their 13th annual book festival at the Duke Energy Center. You can catch us at Books by the Banks all day long with some of our authors and illustrators! Erin Barker will be at our booth all day with her picture book, Mr. Pumpkin’s Tea Party. Our publisher, Dr. John Hutton, will also be at the book with his newest book, Gritty Kitty. The press team will also be available to answer any and all questions you may have about the press!

Looking ahead: Winter 2020

Winter Institute

What Is It?

An American Booksellers Association’s (ABA) event, the Winter Institute is a three-plus day conference, comprised of keynote and featured speakers, education sessions, roundtables, author events, and networking opportunities with booksellers, publishers, and industry vendors.

Winter Institute is exclusively for ABA member bookstores with a conference fee that covers breakfasts, lunches, and receptions. ABA arranges for a special hotel rate, and offers scholarships through publisher partners and others.

When Will We Be There?

We’re so excited to attend the Winter Institute for the first time! We will have two spring 2020 books in the Galley Room, which will be open for the entire conference. You can also catch us at “Meet the Presses,” where our Editorial and Marketing Director Amy Dean will be available for questions, more 2020 books samples, and swag!
