Tell us about yourself.

I’m in the middle of a fine arts degree at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, with a concentration in painting and drawing.

I always knew I needed to go into a creative career, after going through phases of wanting to be an architect, a pastry chef, and an art museum curator, I decided on what seemed to be perfect for me.

I grew up loving to read and always making art. Naturally, I took my favorite books as inspiration and it finally clicked that I should work in children’s books.

Inspired by our titles and the artwork in our picture books, Bailey sketched some new characters to keep practicing her illustration skills.

Growing up, what were your favorite children’s books?

I grew up on books written by Roald Dahl and Illustrated by Quentin Blake—my very favorites. Both the words and illustrations helped form who I am. I loved classic books: Goodnight Moon; Love You Forever; If You Give a Mouse a Cookie; The Very Hungry Caterpillar; and The Rainbow Fish.

Some of my favorite authors/illustrators are Sandra Boynton, Dr Seuss, and the author and illustrator of the Winnie the Pooh books, A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard.

Which blue manatee press books do you recommend?

I really love the illustrations in Odd Animal ABC’s, as well as both My Papa is a Princess and My Mama is a Mechanic. All three of these books have major focuses on creativity—a skill I value and love to see children interacting with.

What do you hope to take from this internship?

Through this internship, I’m getting experiences that aren’t direct but more on the flip side of my future career. I think this should help me know how to present myself as an author/illustrator in an efficient and responsible way—hopefully leading to success in my profession and dream.

“Blue Manatee Press couldn’t have been a better fit for me. I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity.”
