As is tradition, the last Saturday in April is Independent Bookstore Day! Launched in California in 2014, Independent Bookstore Day has since gone national, with independent bookstores across the country participating with day-long festivities and bookselling!
“I think now, more than ever, there's a feeling that books offer us a deeper, more empathetic view of the world,” says Samantha Schoech, founder and director of Independent Bookstore Day, “from contemporary political memoirs to poetry to coloring books — all of it — and I think bookstores are really stepping up."
As an independent book publisher, we do our best to make Independent Bookstore Day something we celebrate EVERY day! Here’s how you can support your local independent bookstore.
First, find a store near you!
Not sure where your closest independent bookstore is? Not to worry—you can search your area for your nearest independent bookstore here!
Bring a friend!
The best way to spread the word about a great independent bookstore is to bring someone with you! Take a walk to your bookstore of choice with a friend or a loved one!
Stay a while!
Make sure you carve out enough time in your day to spend at your independent bookstore! These are places created with creativity, hard work, dedication, and a love of books at their core! Enjoy it for as long as you can!
Chat with the booksellers!
Not sure what you want? People who work at independent bookstores aren’t just working there because it’s a job—they’re working there because they love books! Tell them what you like and they’ll point you in the right direction!
Come again soon!
Don’t be a stranger! Make your local independent bookstore your go-to book-buying spot! You’ll build your community of book-lovers while supporting your local business! It’s a win-win!
