Heartland Fall Forum 2019 Recap!

We spent much of last week in Cleveland, Ohio at Heartland Fall Forum 2019!

Heartland Fall Forum 2019 was one of the last book events for us this year, and it was a whirlwind of chatting with booksellers, fellow publishers, and authors!

Here’s a quick glance at this year’s Heartland Fall Forum!

What Is Heartland Fall Forum?

Hosted jointly by the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association and the Great Lakes Independent Booksellers Association, Heartland Fall Forum is a gathering place for those interested in independent bookstores throughout the Midwest. Heartland represents nearly 350 independent bookstores across 12 states in the Midwest.

According to the Heartland Fall Forum website, “We provide a rich environment for anyone allied to the book industry to meet one another, network, introduce authors, promote new titles, place orders, and learn crucial skills from one another to keep independent bookselling strong. We offer a busy show floor, a wide range of author events, and various formats of practical and inspiring education.”

This year’s Heartland Fall Forum took place at the Renaissance Hotel in Cleveland, Ohio.

What Did We Do at the Festival?

At our booth on the trade show floor from Thursday-Friday, we had copies of Odd Animal ABCs, My Papa is a Princess, My Mama is a Mechanic, Mr. Pumpkin’s Tea Party, Gritty Kitty, and Cows!, as well as samples of some of our upcoming 2020 titles!

The trade show floor had booths from all kinds of publishers, both small independent publishers and large, mainstream publishers—giving all of us that unique experience of sharing our own stories in the industry, to learn from each other, and to see what’s coming up next in the book world.

Aside from having a booth on the trade show floor, blue manatee press participated in the Rep-Around Lunch, where we had the opportunity to talk one-on-one with booksellers across the midwest (and beyond!) about our fall 2019 titles, as well as our upcoming book projects!

What Did We Learn at Heartland Fall Forum?

Getting to talk on a more individual level with booksellers gives us a great opportunity to hear what people are saying in the industry!

Not only did we get to share our books and future titles, we got to hear firsthand accounts of the activities and events booksellers are doing in their stores inspired by blue manatee press titles! From tea parties in celebration of Mr. Pumpkin to learning the ABCs with our favorite odd animals, booksellers across the country are getting creative!

What’s Next For Blue Manatee Press?

We’ll be attending Books by the Banks at the end of this month, along with founder Dr. John Hutton and author/illustrator Erin Barker! If you’re in the Cincinnati area, come visit our booth! The event is free to the public, and is from 10:00-4:00 on October 26!

And starting in 2020, we’ll be attending the Winter Institute a three-plus day conference, with our spring 2020 titles and more!
