We all know the story: On January 24, 2017, the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden welcomed little baby hippo Fiona! But celebrating would have to wait, since Fiona was born six weeks premature.
Too little to stand on her own or for her mom Bibi to be able to nurse her, Fiona was given round-the-clock care from a team of caregivers, veterinarians, and other helpful humans to provide Fiona with comfort, nutrition, and all the care she needed to gain strength and thrive.
Today, Fiona is bigger and feeling better than ever as she celebrates her second birthday! “We’re so excited to celebrate Fiona’s second birthday,” says Angela Hatke, digital engagement and publicity manager at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.
“She’s come such a long way from the 29 pound baby that was born six weeks premature. With each new milestone, from weighing in at 1,000 in 2018, to turning two, we are reminded how thankful we are for the wonderful care she received from her care team in those critical beginning days and for the support from the Cincinnati community.”
To celebrate Fiona’s birthday, the Zoo has a special cake planned, as well as a Facebook Live behind-the-scenes stream! “If it’s warmer than 45 degrees, we’ll move the celebration outside to Hippo Cove!” says Angela. “Everyone should wear their favorite Fiona gear on January 24 to celebrate, even if you can’t make it to the Zoo!”
