Here at the blue manatee press, we believe books have the power to inspire creativity, and one blue manatee press series is sure to immerse you and your child in creative play!
“My fondest memories of childhood involve mud puddles, fireflies, rolling in the grass with my dog, building block towers, and trying to throw a baseball through the clouds” says blue manatee press founder, Dr. John Hutton. “When it rained, I lost myself in picture books, joining characters on all kinds of adventures. In a single generation, this rich experience seems at risk of collapsing into two-dimensional screens that follow us everywhere, beginning in infancy.”
The Baby Unplugged Series!
This observation was the inspiration behind the Baby Unplugged series—books intended to encourage real-world, creative play.
“In my medical residency, we were to create an advocacy project meant to educate families on a health issue, and I chose limiting screen time,” says Dr. John. “Because of my connection to books and the [the blue manatee children’s] bookstore, I decided to get the message across in books rather than the standard brochure.”
So far, the Baby Unplugged series consists of ten total books, with plans to add more!
“Baby Unplugged is a celebration of ‘old school’ childhood in the critical first three years, where imagination and hands-on play fuel happiness, health and learning for a lifetime.”
Dr. John Hutton
The series has so far garnered universal praise, with critics saying, “These books work on so many levels, with poetry to hear, pictures to talk about, and a powerful message. They give children just the sort of delightful and mind-expanding experiences they need, while leading parents to see the child’s world through a creative and joyful lens. Wonderful medicine for an overly electronic age!” - Dr. Robert Needlman, MD, associate professor of pediatrics, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and cofounder, Reach Out and Read.
